I have known this owner for a long time, and I bought several things from him before. This day, I went to chat in his antique shop, he told me that he wanted to retire and sell all his collections in a low price. Not sure he was saying this truly or not, so I asked him to give me a quote on a nice plate which displayed in his shop for years, and I liked that piece very much but due to high price I could not buy it at the time. He gave me again a high price and I teased him this was not at all a retired price, so I offered him another low ball. Out of my expectation, the owner accepted my price and I then got a great piece as my retirement gift.
This is a middle Qing dynasty Blue and White Frolicking Lions with Interlaced Floral Pattern shallow rounded plate. Elegantly painted in vivid tones of cobalt blue, the plate featured with total five frolicking lions in inner and outer plate, all enclosed within a broad band of composite floral scrolls issuing curling foliage. It is a great piece of folk art from middle Qing dynasty. |
