Description (guaranteed):
Under a very coincidental opportunity, I finally got this Jade Carving Pendant with Pairs of Dragon and Phenix Figures. I met with Mr. Liu at a shop where I used to shop around. He should be wholesaler and knows most of these jade vendors. I was talking with the shop owner and saw him with a gray jade pendant in very good color. I asked him if I could take a further look. He was kind of hesitated. I guessed he didn't want to take other people's business away. However, he finally showed to me. Very nice jade, with natural earth permeated color, thick enough, and with very obvious Ming style.
I asked him right away about the price. He looked even more hesitated. The shop owner on the side didn't against him to quote and said this is really a good piece. Made him feel less pressure. Finally he gave me a price, not in my target and he didn't want to lower either, so I got to walk away. Felt a little bit pity.
I then went to another place to shop around. While talking with an acquainted shop owner, I saw Mr. Liu walked by and he also knew the owner. He was still wearing that gray jade pendant. I thought this is really coincident to meet him again in two totally different places. This time I should not let him go easily. Of course, first started shouting about price too high and complained about he didn't know how to do long term business. However, it didn't help much, so I had to back off a little bit on price. He sounded still got some concerns. Anyway, I gave him the money and took the pedant first. He kept saying he didn't make any money, plus this pedant attached with a lazurite bead from the Warring States (403-221 B.C.).
I told him not to argue too much during the Lunar New Year, and this jade pedant knows the master and is chasing after me to buy it, so he must sell it to me. I told hime, next time, if I got chance I can buy more from him. (I actually did buy more from him after that).
After I got the jade pedant, I didn't quite like the way he tied the pedant. So, I went to another near by Chinese knot shop asking the owner to tie again for me. After retie, still not quite like the way I wanted it to be, but this was almost the best this shop could do. To leave it as is for now. Weeks later, I went to another more acquainted Chinese knot shop and told them again my thought. This shop has better skill and finally got just the way I like it.
Dragon on top, phenix under, circling around the cloud pattern ring, plus the beautiful flat knot and lazurite bead from the Warring States, such a gorgeous piece and very worthwhile to own. |
