In ancient time, the pattern of melon and butterfly implies many children and grand children together with healthy and long life. In Chinese character, the pronunciation of melon and butterfly assonances to big melon and small melon. That means many melons which imply to continuously with many children, and successors.
In late Qing, Royal family used to celebrate Lunar New Year Eve by placing melons in the room and taking out two boxes containing butterflies.
