Description:

The Five Dynasties (907-960) is a period of great turmoil that reappeared in Chinese history after the Southern and Northern Dynasties. It was located in the transitional period from the fall of the Tang Dynasty to the reunification of the Northern Song Dynasty. After the end of the Five Dynasties, Zhou Shizong revealed the defamation of the Buddha (955), abolished monasteries, destroyed statues and cast money, collected bells and cymbals, destroyed bronze Buddha statues, and cast Zhoutong money with the destroyed statues, the world is called - the one of the people. For a while, Buddhist temples were destroyed, scriptures were scattered and lost, Buddha statues were almost destroyed, and cultural relics were declining. So far, the art of Buddhist statues in the north tends to decline, and the economic center of gravity has gradually shifted from the Yellow River Basin in the north to the Yangtze River Basin in the south.
This Buddha appeared in such a historical context. On the artistic level, it inherited the plump and gorgeous characteristics since the late Tang Dynasty, and opened the classical realistic style of the Song Dynasty, which is full of high historical meaning. This sitting statue of Amitabha in the Five Dynasties period, with headwear and snail hair, a meat bun, a narrow and flat forehead, plump cheeks, gentle and auspicious, simple and clear lines, and clear facial features, sitting on the platform with two legs tied, wearing a Buddha clothing, the clothing layers are meticulous, and the texture is good, giving people a vivid and soft artistic beauty. This bronze gilt work is dignified and generous in shape, vivid in charm and appropriate in proportion. It reflects the extremely high level of carving art and casting technology. It is a standard five-generation statue. Now in the Huzhou Museum, a bronze Amitabha sitting statue unearthed from the Wuyue Kingdom period of the Five Dynasties in the Huzhou Feiying Tower is very similar to this product and can be used for appreciation. |
