Description:
I bought this pair of Nanmu carved Ming Dynasty Manjusri and Samantabhadra from a Japan antique dealer. The dealer was selling these 2 statues separately, and I am very lucky to finally purchase both Bodhisattvas and make them a pair. I like the face and style of Bodhisattva, and price is also reasonable, so I just bought it for study.

This statue of Manjusri is riding on a very fine Lion, tame and crouched, with smiling appearance. This elegant Manjusri sculpture wearing crown with beautiful decorations, bound hair falling down to the shoulder, and with necklace, bracelets on the upper arms, wrists, and ankles. The appearance is solemn, respectful, and majestic. Both eyes looking down peacefully, and showing an appearance of benevolent face and serene expression. Both hands were missing but if they were still there, it should have been the left hand in the form of Abhaya Mudra, and the right hand in front of the chest in the form of dHyana Mudra (mudra of Meditation). Her upper body is dressed in a double-collar rope incised with delicate design and covering both shoulders, while the rope also draping down naturally to lower body, adorned with multiple jeweled necklace, and limbs with bracelets, very real and realistic.

The dealer said this is a Ming dynasty Bodhisattva statue, and several of my friends also agreed, anyway, I am very happy to have a collection in this quality and style. Indeed a good Bodhisattva to keep.

Condition and Additional Specification:
The Nanmu is in an excellent state of preservation. Most of the orginal painting and gilding are somewhat rubbed off, as can easily be seen in the photos. The details are incised and well delineated. There are some minor cracks under the base, and on the recessed areas in the back of the sculpture. Small holes around the statue due to aging.
