Today is Daddy 90th years old birthday in Lunar calendar (Double Ten). He was born in 1925, but the ID registered as 1923. Took Daddy to his favorite Japanese food for lunch, and then went shopping around the antique shops in the afternoon.
I just bought a Ming Dynasty Bronze Guanyin Avalokiteshvara Statue weeks ago, and the owner told me that she has another same period Guanyin which she acquired long time ago. I saw the photos she showed me, the appearance of the Buddha is very solemn and respectful, and I like the statue very much. However, I still need to see the actual statue to ensure the authentic. On Daddy birthday afternoon, I went to her shop to check, and happily found the actual statue is much more splendid and majestic than the photos, a very brilliant Ming Dynasty Bronze Ruyi Guanyin Avalokiteshvara Statue.
The Owner said she could offer me the same price as last time, but I told her that the original painted colors were mostly off, so she should offer me a lower price. She finally generously gave me a better deal, and I then have another great collection on my Daddy birthday.
This elegant Ruyi Guanyin sculpture is a little taller and bigger than my previous collection, the appearance is solemn, respectful, and majestic, representing of the Buddha wearing monastic robes, seating on a integral double lotus pedestal, wearing five-leaved crown with an Amitabha on it, fastened by a ribbon with swirling ends, Bound hair falling down to the shoulder, a pair of circular earrings, and with necklace, bracelets on the upper arms, wrists, and ankles. Both eyes looking down peacefully, and showing an appearance of benevolent face and serene expression. Both hands gently hold a Ruyi placing in front of the chest, and the sole of the feet facing to the sky. Her upper body is dressed in a double-collar rope incised with delicate design and covering both shoulders, while the rope also draping down naturally to lower body, adorned with multiple jeweled necklace, and limbs with bracelets, very real and realistic.
I saw a same period and style Amitabha Buddha statue from the net (See Photo C, from German Nagel, 2005 Autumn Auction ), but that one has more original cobalt blue and gilded colors. My collection has only very few traces of original cobalt blue and gilded colors to the body due to the age, however, the lotus base has more gilded colors on it, and the artworks are in simplicity, but detail and delicate. |

and Additional Specification: |
The bronze is in an excellent state of preservation. Most of the orginal cobalt blue and gilding are somewhat rubbed off, as can easily be seen in the photos. The details are incised and well delineated. There are some minor encrustations under the base which were left un-gilt, and on the recessed areas in the back of the sculpture.
