Description:
This painted Copper Figure of Vaishravana, one head and two arms, with very majestic face, heading jewllery crown, wear golden armor, surrounding by necklace decorated with perals and jades.

Right hand grasping treasure umbrella (missing), and left hand holding a fortune rat, siting relaxly on the lotus seat, implicating the endless treasure and fortune belong to him .
 
Condition and Additional Specification:

The bronze is in an excellent state of preservation. While the high points of the bronze are somewhat rubbed, as can easily be seen in the photos. The details are incised and well delineated. There are some encrustations under the arm , base, and on the recessed areas in the back of the sculpture.

財寶天王,梵名「毘沙門天」,譯為「多聞」,表其福德美名,普聞於四方之義。多聞天王乃帝釋天之外臣,是北方的守護神,統率夜叉諸部,居須彌山之北的水晶宮中。祂與東方的持國天王、南方的增長天王、西方的廣目天王合稱「四大天王」,多聞天則為四大天王之首,為藏傳佛教知名的財神,主增益法門。

依佛教經典記載,釋迦牟尼佛住世時,財寶天王曾在佛前立下願護持佛法的誓願,並給予眾生財富,令其成就世間法。而依藏密儀軌所述,財寶天王名「南通謝」,乃五方佛系統之南方寶生佛所化現,周邊圍繞八路財神為部屬協助度眾,滿眾生之願。又由於財寶天王曾率領其夜叉眾與毗濕奴打敗魔王羅伐拿,因能護持世間,故又稱「護世者」,從此更被敬為武神、軍神。同時也因常守護如來道場,時常聽聞如來說法,所以亦是知識之神。
