This Bhaisajyaguru statue was bought from the same rugged body shape owner after I purchased the Six-Armed (Sadbhuja) Mahakala not long ago. He said he bought this statue from one private collector at quarter a million NTD, and the original collector located this Bhaisajyaguru at the entrance of his guest house, pretty magnificent in size, of 46cm. The owner said it is a Buddha from Ming dynasty, but I do not think so at all. This statue has two sections with Buddha body and lotus platform, with good workmanship. The whole body is carved with 8-lucky symbols, the right hand shows in Varada-Mudra pose grapping a Medicine Terminalia Fruit (Hezi, the king of Tibetan medicine), and left hand in Dhyana-Mudra pose holding treasure vase filled with all great medicines to cure illness of people. Seating on Lotus Agora in Vajrasana full-lotus posture. Truly a pretty and significant Buddha statue, not a new one, but I really do not think it is up to Ming or Qing dynasty. However, I always wanted to have a bigger Buddha, and price was reasonable, plus the owner gave me another jade Lei Zi, so I still bought the statue to my collection, kind of helping him out and helping me out. |

The bronze is in an excellent state of preservation. While the high points of the gilding are somewhat rubbed, as can easily be seen in the photos, most of the original gilding remains. The details are incised and well delineated. There is some minor encrustation under the base which was left un-gilt, and on the recessed areas in the back of the sculpture.
