When browsing around the ShenZhen antique market, I found this beautiful pocket Buddha of Guanyin. At first, I didnot pay much of attention to it, and only noticed that the Buddha has some greenish rusty on it. The owner said he found this Buddha in Beijing and the price offered was reasonable I then asked for the magnifier so to closely exam the Image.

The body of the Buddha is very pretty, the crystallized greenish rusty Is very obvious around the whole body, and It has the special red spots which are only shown on very old bronze object. Very typical so called (greenish rusty and red spot) . The seller said this Buddha Is at least from Qing, but I think It Is at least from Yuan based on Its style and crystallized rusty and red spots. The owner knew that I like the figure and wont lower the price any. I eventually went there 3 times and added the price several times, and finally put this Buddha into my pocket.

After more close look, I noticed this Buddha is holding a vase on her hands, and the size of the figure can just put into the palm, it is really a very beautiful easy-carried pocket Buddha (Guanyin).

The bronze is in an excellent state of preservation. While the whole body Is somewhat rubbed, as can easily be seen in the photos, most of the original greenish rusty remains. The details are incised and well delineated. There is some minor encrustation under the base, and on the recessed areas in the back of the sculpture.

隨身佛這個詞並不來自西藏,而是漢語的叫法。最初因為藏族以遊牧為主,佛堂和佛具必須隨身攜帶,才有了這種以公分計算的佛像。隨身佛只是泛指各種方便隨身攜帶的佛像,並沒有什麼特別的規格或限定。尺寸通常在13公分以內,材質有很多種,如木頭、石頭、象牙、泥塑和銅銀等金屬,其中以泥塑和銅最為普及。

泥塑佛像藏人稱為搽搽(chacha),是最常見也最普通的佛像,通常寺廟舉辦大型法會時就會製作一批搽搽讓信徒請回去供奉,有時候大型佛塔或佛像會內裝搽搽,如果是古代佛塔或佛像裡面取出來的搽搽就非常珍貴。搽搽有半面和圓塑兩種,隨身的搽搽通常是半面的。

石頭的隨身佛以印度黑石和黃石最珍貴,早期西藏到印度的留學生或印度到西藏工作的僧人多少會帶一些石製隨身佛回西藏,這些作品刻工精細,具有明具有明顯印度風格,數量稀少,相當具有宗教價值。

銅製佛像是隨身佛的主流,古代印度和西藏製作銅像都是採取失蠟法,鑄模工具相當簡陋,製作小佛像技術上相當困難,釵h銅像上的細節都是靠雕工刻出來的。早期(11-13)世紀的小佛像材質上以青銅為主,15世紀以後多用合金紅銅和黃銅,18世紀以後則出現較多銀製品(早期銀佛非常少)。由於隨身佛宗教上的意義大於藝術價值,加上製作工藝比中型佛像還困難,因此大多數的隨身佛外觀上都顯得粗糙,不過還是有一些作品相當精美。一件年代久遠而且做工精美的隨身佛,其出身和背景一定不凡。
